MUSACK

Last week I had the opportunity to shoot & attend a rock n’ roll carnival/backyard barbeque in LA. This unique and special event was hosted & created by Donick Cary, a fellow Nantucketer who now resides in California, to raise funds for MUSACK – a charity organization that provides musical instruments, scholarships and cultural exchanges year round for Nantucket kids. For four years he has hosted some amazing concerts, proceeds of which have allowed Nantucket high schoolers to purchase new guitars & receive lessons. This year the event attracted an impressive line-up of performers including Yo La Tengo, Childish Gambino, She & Him, Dead Ships, Drug Cabin, The Soft Pack, Tijuana Panthers, and Jason Wolverton . The topnotch performances and friendly crowd – a mix of kids, parents, and an eclectic mix of celebs(  I spied the cast of New Girl, Busy Philipps, & Fred Willard) – along with an incredible silent auction made for an awesome day that benefited a great cause. . . can’t wait to see what Donick & MUSACK have in store for next year.

Currently, MUSACK has plans to expand into Los Angeles with the specific goal of bringing its guitar and instruction programming to at risk and underprivileged kids in central LA. For more information and where to donate, please visit musack.org.
